A caregiver encounters many residents that have different conditions and needs. One of the unique conditions in which you may come across is a resident that has an Ostomy. This course will begin with a brief overview of the digestive system, the functions it performs, and how an Ostomy assists the resident with these functions. We will also discuss why the procedure is performed, and how you as a caregiver can assist your resident with the care and maintenance of his/her Ostomy. We will address several components to become aware of in Ostomy care, and go over tips to encourage the resident experiencing emotional insecurity due to the process. Being familiar with the functions and care requirements of an Ostomy will go a long way to help create a comfortable environment for your residents who utilize this unique system.
