Non Elder Care: Other Populations with Special Needs Info:

This 4 hour course package covers caregiving for other clients who require assistance. These 4 important training topics are relevant to all ages and populations: mental illness, developmental disabilities, working with people who have physical disabilities, and how to work with children and families.

In this course package, you will learn about different types of mental illness and how to care for those clients; the different types of developmental disabilities and how to care for those individuals; physical disabilities and how to support those clients to protect them and yourself; and how to work with children of all ages and their family unit.

  • NEC101 - Mental Illness
  • NEC102 - Developmental Disabilities
  • NEC103 - Working with People with Physical Disabilities
  • NEC104 - Working with Children and Families
  • NEC101 Mental Illness - Caregivers working with individuals with mental illness must clearly understand defense mechanisms and other coping skills these individuals use to handle their unique challenges. Learning to assist the mentally ill person appropriately, while supporting family members is just a part of the tasks of a caregiver of these individuals.
  • NEC102 Developmental Disabilities - Caregivers for individuals with developmental disabilities will learn to support self-care, communication, mobility and independence, while understanding the causes and special needs of this population.
  • NEC103 Working with people with Physical Disabilities - Caregivers may be used to assisting older people with physical disabilities, but younger disabled persons present unique challenges to caregivers. Understanding the special needs of this population is key to appropriate caregiving and support.
  • NEC104 Working with Children and Families - Caregivers working with children need to understand basic care for infants and children, as well as developmental tasks, ranges of normal behaviors, and how to support parents in their care.
