The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. This course engages learners in learning about Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, how Alzheimer’s disease affects the brain, and conditions and diseases that may cause irreversible dementia. Information about the conditions and disorders that may mimic the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and the characteristics and stages of dementia related diseases is presented.
The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with the care of persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. This course engages the learner in considering behavior as the language of dementia, offers strategies for interpreting behavior as communication, and provides a problem-solving approach to addressing behavioral expressions of distress, including pain.
The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with the care of people living with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. Functional levels related to the stages of disease are discussed. Strategies for maximizing independence and active engagement in activities of daily living are discussed. Alternative communication methods that a resident may use to indicate his or her needs and how to identify and address those needs are discussed. Signs and symptoms of pain a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia are reviewed. The risk of and strategies to prevent dehydration and malnutrition are provided.

The purpose of this course is to review terms used when providing a medication service to those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Common terms are reviewed along with basic medication concepts. The difference between side effect and an adverse drug reaction is discussed. The learner is engaged in reviewing medications typically used in treating the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s with their associated risks and benefits. Alternatives to medication use and gradual dose reduction is presented.
