This course engages the learner in considering behavior as the language of dementia and techniques for assisting with activities of daily living. This course offers strategies for interpreting behavior as communication and provides a problem-solving approach to address behavioral expressions of distress. Examples of techniques for promoting effective care techniques, independence, and communication are offered throughout the course. Information about how to offer meaningful activities is presented. Medical information, including medications often prescribed for the person living with dementia and the risk of dehydration and malnutrition because of the disease process, is provided. The course ends with a focus on stress management for the caregiver.
