The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with information about mental health disorders and to provide understanding about the role of trauma in mental illness. We will begin the course by providing a context for mental health and mental illness and by taking a historical view that examines social and cultural perspectives on mental health.

We will review the prevalence of mental health disorders in the United States and across the world and examine subsets of the population, including older adults. Information on common classes of mental health disorders will be given. The course will provide an understanding of trauma in the development of mental illness. Barriers to accessing care and treatment will be discussed, including the role of stigma and poverty.

Case examples will be interspersed throughout the course to illustrate how mental health conditions may be experienced by older adults. As we discuss specific disorders, information will be provided on effective treatments used to restore mental health, including trauma-informed interventions.
