Do You Know Your Residents’ Drug Allergies?

Residents may have an allergy to a medication. It is important to determine if a resident has drug allergies during the pre-admission appraisal process. This information can be obtained from:
- The resident
- The resident’s family/responsible party
- Health records (e.g., history and physical)
- The resident’s physician
The resident’s medication record should have a place to indicate allergy information. If the resident does not have an allergy, it should be listed as “no known drug allergy” which is often abbreviated NKDA. The allergy section of the record should never be left blank.
